Sea of Galilee / Periods: Hellenistic, New Testament, Josephus Flavius, Roman, Byzantine, Arabic.

In the north of Israel, north of Lake Kinneret and close to Korazin, The White Synagogue or Maale Gamla, there is the pilgrimage site Tel Bethsaida. The team of 360HolyPlaces™ went to the site to film in Virtual Reality 360° this exceptional place.

According to tradition, the three apostles Peter, Andrew and Philip would be born here in Bethsaida. Jesus himself visited the site of Bethsaida and performed several miracles. (Marc)

The site covers a large area of about 20 acres and rises 30 meters above a fertile valley. The geological studies carried out on the site show that in the past this valley was part of the Sea of Galilee. A series of earthquakes caused the accumulation of silt, creating this valley and driving back the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. The result of this process, which continued until the Hellenistic period, was that Bethsaida, originally built on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, was about 1.5 km north of the shore. The name Bethsaida means “hunting house” in Hebrew. Bethsaida is a “set of two cities”: an iron age town of Geshur and a Roman town known as Julias. The region of Bethsaida refers us to two miracles that Jesus realized: the healing of the blind and the first feeding of the multitude.
