The capital of Israel is Jerusalem. Jerusalem represents a mosaic of different people’s faiths and nationality nevertheless. The first historical mention of Jerusalem is in the Bible in the era of Patriarchs. The king David declares Jerusalem as Israel’s capital also known as Zion. His son Solomon builds the first temple.
Jerusalem is sacred to all three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. And here politics and religion are profoundly linked, all three religions associate the city with their core beliefs.
For Christians, Jerusalem is the city where Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead. The Church of Holy Sepulchre is built on the site where the events of the Crucifixion of Jesus and all events before are believed to have happened in Via Dolorosa.
For Jews, Jerusalem is the holy city that God has given them the Western Wall is all that remains of the second temple destroyed by the Romans almost 2000 years ago.
Where the temple once stood, Al-Aqsa mosque now rises into the heavens after Mecca and Medina this site in Jerusalem is the holiest in Islam. The Dome of the rock is built on the spot where Muhammad is believed to have ascended into heaven. In the old city which covers less than one square kilometer, the three religions live side-by-side in clearly defined districts.
Jerusalem is clearly a mosaic of the three monotheistic religions and represents in the world the most abundant city in history, culture, archeology and spirituality.
