Their charism bears testimony in the Church and in the world of the love of God for the Jewish people. This ministry is based on the study of the Word of God and enables the creation of links to reconciliation among all peoples. Situated in Via Dolorosa between the Station 2 and Station 3, this convent was discovered in 1857, during the construction of a house of education by Father Ratisbonne, the ruins are authentic and offer the believers a place of meditation and prayer that promotes silence. The location of the Convent of the Ecce Homo contains important vestiges of the Roman era. Starting from the Crusades, the Christian tradition saw in this quarter the starting point of the Painful Flight, and here we commemorated the Suffering of Christ in the hands of the Roman Soldiers and his judgment by Pilate, hence the name “Ecce Homo, “which alludes to John 19: 5: Jesus went out, bearing the crown of thorns and the mantle of purple color. - a cistern (the Strouthion, a Greek word meaning sparrow)
- a stone paving with games,
- a bow.
The current archaeological studies lead us to think that the convent is to the north of the site of the fortress Antonia. The fortress, built on an open platform, surrounded by a ditch, was built by Herod the Great around 30 BC. J.-C. It served to protect the City from attacks from the north and allowed the Roman soldiers to control the entire Temple. See Flavius Josephus: “the war of the Jews”.
- The Strouthion cistern (No. 3) A canal (6) built in the time of the Hasmoneans (2nd century BC) brought water to the cisterns of the Temple. Herod made, digging on his way, in the north pit of the Antonia, a reservoir of water, the Strouthion), for the fortress and its environs. The cistern was later covered with a vault by Hadrian in 135 AD to build the Roman vole. The house was built largely above the cistern.

- Hadrian erected a Triple Arc (14) as one of the triumphant entrances of Aelia Capitolina. The largest of these arches is called “Arch of Ecce Homo”. It crosses Via Dolorosa and extends into the interior of the Basilica (I6) where you can see the north arch. smaller. Today the arch remains the place where the Church commemorates the trial of Jesus before Pilate. The basilica, built in 1918 was erected in the Basilica of the Coronation of Thorns by Leo XIII. the same year.
